NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo isn’t impressed by Dalton McGuinty’s latest plan to turn Ontarians into consumers of mass-produced electric cars.

“This is Diesel Dalton at his worst,” says DiNovo, who attended a press conference this morning where McGuinty promised to create a consumer incentive program for electric cars to be produced in the United States by General Motors.

“This is the same Premier who is putting big money into diesel trains that will pollute the air in neighbourhoods very close to where he staged his event this morning,” she noted.

“This is the same Premier who put up every conceivable obstacle to stop Canadian-made, electric Zenn cars from entering Ontario. Now he has this deathbed conversion and promises something vague with few specifics aimed at boosting sales of an expensive car that isn’t even on the market yet. Nice try, Diesel Dalton!”

DiNovo added that the announcement does little to stimulate Ontario’s struggling auto manufacturing sector.

“Where’s the plan to get these cars built in Ontario? Autoworkers in places like Windsor, St. Catharines and Oshawa are reeling from job losses, but there’s nothing in this for them,” she said.
