QUEEN’S PARK - NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says the McGuinty Liberals’ throne speech does nothing to help women through these tough economic times.
“The McGuinty government delivered a throne speech on International Women’s Day that ignored the challenges facing women: 22,000 childcare spaces that are on the chopping block, women still earning less than men, no mention of improving home care and long-term care, for which women are the primary caregivers,” said Horwath.
“Why did the McGuinty government’s five-year plan ignore the challenges facing women?” the NDP Leader asked during today’s Question Period.
Horwath noted many of the challenges Ontario women face each and every day: The recession has left more of them carrying family finances, they still earn less than men, they are more likely to live in poverty even when they are working, and a new crisis in childcare is leaving working moms wondering whether they can afford to go to work.
“The McGuinty government’s poor decisions have a disproportionate affect on women. They are left behind, but they feel the impact first,” said Horwath.
