Horwath in Ottawa Centre to support NDP Candidate Anil Naidoo; New Democrats’ Leader repeats call for leaders’ debate on jobs

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath urged voters in Ottawa Centre to support positive change by sending NDP candidate Anil Naidoo to Queen’s Park on October 6.

“The status quo is only working for a very lucky few,” said Horwath. “That’s why we need change that puts people and their communities first.”

Anil Naidoo is a long-time inner-city advocate and community organizer, whose family fled to Canada to escape apartheid in South Africa. Since moving to Ottawa in 2000, he has worked tirelessly to improve his community and help everyday families.

Speaking to an energetic crowd at Naidoo’s campaign headquarters, Horwath repeated her challenge to the other party leaders to stop the “squabbling” and agree to “a genuine face-to-face debate on how to create good jobs in Ontario.”

The NDP leader said “New Democrats will get people working” by rewarding “employers who create new jobs” as well as with new tax credits supporting investment in worker training and equipment.

“Unlike the Liberals, our plan will increase the number of jobs available to everyone – men, women, young people, new Canadians – anyone who needs work.”

Horwath said New Democrats will make life more affordable for families by taking the HST off electricity and home heating, and by providing more support to municipalities to help freeze transit fares at current levels.
