NDP demand answers into $180 million Liberal seat-saver
Queen’s Park - NDP Energy Critic Peter Tabuns said Ontarians deserve to know the truth about how and why the McGuinty Liberals cancelled a gas plant days before the last election leaving Ontarians on the hook for $180 million.
“This $180 million seat-saver was a politically calculated move by the McGuinty Liberals to save Liberal seats,” said Tabuns. “When the Liberals make decisions about power plants in Ontario based on whether they’re going to win or lose seats, people of this province end up paying more money for their electricity.”
Eleven days before the last election, the McGuinty Liberals abruptly announced they would cancel the Mississauga gas plant. Despite claims by the Premier and former Minister of Energy Brad Duguid that the gas plant was needed to meet the area’s electricity demand, Minister of Energy Chris Bentley now says the plant is no longer needed.
Tabuns is calling on the Liberals to release all the documents and contracts pertaining to the Mississauga and Oakville gas plants. In 2010, the McGuinty Liberals hastily backed down from their decision to build a gas plant in Oakville after fierce backlash from the community, a riding held by Liberal MPP Kevin Flynn.
“Ontarians need to know whether this costly cancellation of the gas plant was based on new information and rational planning – or just political self-interest,” said Tabuns.
