NDP forces Liberals to release nuke cost estimates

Queen’s ParkAfter refusing to provide a cost estimate to the media yesterday, Duguid said in response to a question from NDP Energy Critic Peter Tabuns that the refurbishment would cost up to $10-billion.

Tabuns had raised concern that the government is planning to move ahead with the refurbishment without a clear indication of its cost.

“Given the rising cost of nuclear energy and Ontario’s history of cost overruns as well as safety concerns related to nuclear, the McGuinty government has a responsibility to be open and forthright about the costs of new nuclear projects – and the cost of greener alternatives,” said Tabuns.

In his response, Duguid refused to commit to protecting Ontarians from cost overruns associated with the Darlington rebuild.

In response to NDP pressure, Minister of Energy Brad Duguid today released cost estimates for the proposed refurbishment of the Darlington Nuclear Reactor.
