NDP Leader Andrea Horwath’s Statement on Spirit Day
The recent tragic suicide of 15-year-old Jamie Hubley in Ottawa is a terrible reminder of the harassment and bullying that LGBT youth continue to face.
Today, on Spirit Day we will remember LGBT young people recently lost to suicide, including: Jamey Rodemeyer (14), Tyler Clementi (18), Cody J. Barker (17), Seth Walsh (13), Raymond Chase (19), Justin Aaberg (15), Asher Brown (13), Harrison Chase Brown (15), Caleb Nolt (14), Billy Lucas (15), Jeanine Blanchette (21) and Chantal Dube (17).
The pain and isolation felt by these young people is heartbreaking, and their families and friends are now enduring unbearable suffering.
Today people across Ontario wear purple as a heartfelt gesture in memory of these young people and to show our support for LGBT youth by drawing attention to this kind of harassment and bullying inside and outside the classroom.
Ontario New Democrat MPPs have introduced Toby’s Bill to include “gender identity” in Ontario’s Human Rights Code and called for the government to guarantee students have access to Gay-Straight Alliances in schools across the province, and we will keep fighting to create a world where LGBT teens are accepted for who they are and offered the support they need.
Join Team Andrea and help get the word out.
