New Democrats can be trusted for affordable education and job opportunities
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says Ontario families can trust New Democrats to make education affordable and help young people enter the workforce. Today, she outlined New Democrat plans to stop tuition increases and take the interest off of student loans.
“Every election students hear promises. Every year the cost of education keeps climbing. Ontario is now the most expensive province for a post-secondary education. We need change,” said Horwath.” We can tackle the problems of high tuition and student debt by freezing tuition fees and by taking the interest off of student loans. Our comprehensive jobs plan will help young people when they’re ready to enter the world of work.”
Horwath unveiled her plan for affordable post-secondary education while visiting students at Ryerson University with local NDP candidate Jonah Schein (Davenport) and MPP Rosario Marchese (Trinity-Spadina). The plan will freeze tuition fees for college, undergraduate, and graduate students over the next four years and will eliminate the interest on the provincial portion of student loans.
“People are tired of politicians who say anything to get elected. We have a plan to make education affordable that won’t vanish after the election,” said Horwath.
The NDP leader noted that Ontario has the highest tuition fees and the lowest per capita spending on postsecondary education in the country. Ontario undergraduate and graduate students saw tuition rise by 30 per cent since the Liberals came to office. Horwath said that rising tuition will “quickly overwhelm” the Liberals’ recently announced 30 per cent rebate.
“In a global economy, our prosperity as a province will be measured by the quality of our education system and by how accessible that system is,” said Horwath. “New Democrats can be trusted to take action on rising tuition and student debt.”
