Statement from Andrea Horwath on Tamil Heritage Month
It is my pleasure to wish a wonderful celebration to all members of the Tamil community across Ontario who are gathering together for Tamil Heritage Month.
This month includes the important celebration of Thai Pongal, the harvest festival, that brings together friends and family to share a traditional meal, and to give thanks for good fortune and good opportunities to come.
Tamil-Ontarians are a proud community with a complex history and rich cultural traditions. Members of the Tamil community have overcome hardship and prospered. They have set an example by helping their neighbours, by caring for the elderly, by empowering youth and by engaging their democratic rights.
Ontario is all the better for these efforts.
It is time that Ontario joins with other jurisdictions in recognizing the ongoing contributions of the Tamil community to the cultural wealth of Ontario and formally recognizes January as Tamil Heritage Month.
Join Team Andrea and help get the word out.
