NDP Leader Howard Hampton expressed outrage at today’s court decision that will send Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI) First Nation Chief Donny Morris and five other community leaders to jail for six months.
“This unfortunate decision is a direct result of the McGuinty government’s complete and utter failure to assume its constitutional responsibility to consult with First Nations’ communities regarding mineral exploration on their traditional lands,” said Hampton.
“These community leaders are standing up for their rights. They and their community have been let down by the Ministers of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development and Mines and their ineptitude on this file.”
During today’s Question Period, Hampton demanded that the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs resign over the affair.
“The minister failed to protect aboriginal rights at KI. He has demonstrated his inability to fulfill his obligation and resolve this matter. He should resign,” said Hampton.
