The auto industry is vital to the Ontario economy. But Dalton McGuinty has abandoned auto workers along with workers in manufacturing and resource industries.
Since Dalton McGuinty took office, Ontario has lost 175,000 manufacturing jobs. We are losing thousands of jobs in the auto industry. Dalton McGuinty thinks job losses in manufacturing are “inevitable.”
The high-paying jobs in the auto industry are the bedrock of the economy in some communities. For every auto job lost, a community can lose five more jobs. The effect on working families is devastating.
Ontario NDP Leader Howard Hampton says auto workers deserve a fair deal. Hampton will give them that fair deal. The NDP will bring in an Auto Strategy to protect and create thousands of high-paying jobs in the auto industry.
The NDP Auto strategy will give auto workers a fair deal by:
- Creating a $600 million fund for investment over five years that will apply only to the auto sector.
- Requiring companies to meet real targets for maintaining and creating jobs, in return for financial assistance from the fund.
- Providing special incentives for companies in the auto sector that develop and manufacture environmental technologies so the industry can look to the future.
- Pressing the Harper government to reduce the current serious trade imbalance with Asia.
- Pushing Ottawa to seek stronger controls over foreign takeovers by requiring companies to invest in Canadian-based research and to commit to targets for purchasing Canadian-made supplies and services.
On October 10, you can count on the NDP to stand up for a fair deal for auto sector workers. McGuinty got it wrong. New Democrats will make it right.
