Hamilton Centre MPP Andrea Horwath has renewed her call for a provincial inquiry into last July’s fire at Biedermann Packaging after the long-awaited report released by Ontario’s Fire Marshall was short on answers.
This will be the fourth time Horwath has sought to have a formal probe into the July 26th blaze that contaminated Spencer Creek with chemicals, prompting the posting of signs warning of water pollution dangers to children and pets.
Horwath has demanded an inquiry in letters to Premier Dalton McGuinty and two environment ministers and has been trying since February 20 to gain access to all reports related to the Biedermann Fire through Ontario’s freedom of information law.
“The community wants answers that only a public inquiry can provide,” Horwath said. “Inconclusive reports and cursory reviews are totally inadequate. The public has a right to know every last detail about environmental degradation and disasters like Biedermann.”
Hamilton Council requested an inquiry in August of last year.
“The McGuinty government is making a big mistake if it turns its back on Hamilton’s environmental concerns. Plastimet gave us lessons the government seems determined not to learn,” Horwath said.
