NDP Leader Howard Hampton today issued the following statement on the final report of the Ipperwash Inquiry.
"I thank the Inquiry and its personnel for today's final report and commend those who have devoted years of their time to this worthy endeavour. I particularly thank the family of Dudley George for their determination and courage. They refused to let Dudley’s tragic death pass unnoticed. All Ontarians owe them thanks.
The Inquiry’s final report reveals the profound failings of both the provincial and federal government as well as the Ontario Provincial Police. It is incumbent on all levels of government to act on the report’s recommendations immediately and I call on Dalton McGuinty to make that commitment today. The McGuinty government has not been meeting their obligations to First Nations. Instead they have ignored the crisis in First Nations communities across Ontario for four years. As a province we cannot afford to continue this pattern of neglect.
Dudley George died because governments failed to do their job. We need to ensure that this never happens again by implementing these recommendations.
