NDP Justice critic Peter Kormos demanded the McGuinty Liberals launch a full public inquiry into the racial death threats against black correctional officers in Toronto-area jails.

“The McGuinty Liberals have been silent while racism is at an all-time high in Toronto correctional facilities. Targeted black correctional officers have been faced with a surge of written racial threats resulting in a poisonous and dangerous work environment,” said Kormos.

The Justice critic said it is incomprehensible that employees receiving racist death threats does not warrant an investigation under the McGuinty government’s Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

“Minister, you haven’t launched an investigation into these death threats, you haven’t performed a risk assessment for these threatened workers, and you have done nothing to bring this racist and criminal activity to a stop. Isn’t it time for a public inquiry into what’s gone on in these correctional facilities and your ministry’s failure to stop it?” Kormos asked the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

“A public inquiry into these malicious threats cannot and must not be ignored. New Democrats are committed to eradicating racism in the workplace and in our community,” said Kormos.
