NDP Leader Howard Hampton says New Democrats will serve as the effective opposition to a McGuinty government that has let down working families.

Calling today’s cabinet moves a “cosmetic cabinet shuffle,” Hampton vowed the NDP’s team of strong, effective and principled MPPs will stand up for today’s working families and get real results on the issues that matter most.

“A post-election cabinet shuffle is a lot like the NHL pre-season. The roster moves are all very interesting. But the true measure of success is whether your team gets the job done when it counts. That’s where the McGuinty government underachieved in its first term. And that’s why the NDP will be vigilant in opposition. We will propose solutions and hold the Liberals accountable for their failures and broken promises,” he said.

The NDP Leader says the McGuinty government owes working families more than some so-called “fresh faces” in cabinet. Hampton says the NDP will push for policies that help ordinary people.

“Too many seniors in long-term care live in deplorable conditions. Ontario is the child poverty capital of Canada. We are losing tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs. Working families need a change of government policies to deal with these challenges, not just a cosmetic change of faces,” Hampton said.

The NDP will unveil its shadow cabinet next week.
