NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said the McGuinty government is hurting cyclists with an unfair sales tax grab on bicycles and related safety equipment.

“The McGuinty government should do everything it can to encourage alternative green transportation and an active lifestyle. An 8 per cent tax on bicycles and helmets is bad policy and a step in the wrong direction,” said the NDP Leader.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says today’s McGuinty government cabinet shuffle is simply cosmetic and will do little to help stimulate Ontario’s economy and fix any of the other problems the province is facing.

NDP Education Critic Rosario Marchese criticized the Minister of Education for allowing the Arrowsmith program to be cut from the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s budget.

Arrowsmith is a daily cognitive exercise program that helps students to overcome problems with reading, comprehension, mathematics, logical reasoning, and dyslexia among others. Studies indicate that a majority of children who complete the Arrowsmith program are able to completely overcome learning difficulties – no longer requiring special education programs.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is renewing her call for the McGuinty government to grant the Ontario Ombudsman oversight of the so-called “MUSH” sector – municipalities, universities, school boards, and -hospitals and long-term care facilities, as well as Children’s Aid Society.
