Instead of looking for savings through energy efficiency and conservation, the McGuinty Liberals are investing billions into building new nuclear reactors. Nuclear Power has shown itself to to be expensive, unreliable and hazardous to the environment.
This is in addition to their already broken promise to close Ontario's coal-fired hydro generating stations.
Other jurisdictions have shown that energy efficiency and conservation can achieve immediate, meaningful results at significantly lower costs than nuclear power.
Petition to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
Whereas Ontario's need for electricity is outstripping the available locally generated resources which results in the purchase of more expensive power from external sources to meet peak demand.
Whereas the McGuinty Liberals have broken their promise to close Ontario's coal-fired hydro generating stations by 2007 and instead will continue to operate these plants into the indefinite future.
Whereas the McGuinty Liberals have endorsed a plan to build new nuclear power in Ontario despite the evidence which shows nuclear power to be expensive, unreliabale, dirty and dangerous.
Whereas the McGuinty Liberals have made only token efforts to increase energy efficiency and conservation.
Whereas simple measures like paying people to cut power use, raising standards for electrical appliances and moving forward with a green building plan could help Ontario save thousands of megawatts every year, reducing the need for coal and nuclear plants.
Whereas other jurisdictions have shown that energy efficiency and conservation can achieve immediate, meaningful help unlike nuclear plants which could take 10 years or more to build. In the case of California, the state has built the equivalent of 12 power plants with energy efficiency investments - replacing the need for 12,000 megawatts of generation
I Petition the Ontario Government to halt the construction of new nuclear power plants in Ontario and instead direct efforts towards finding savings right now through energy efficiency and conservation measures.
Please add my name to the petition
