Biography:

"It’s time working families got a fair deal. Dalton McGuinty’s record has been one broken promise after another. But he still found time to give himself a $40,000 pay raise. That’s someone who has lost touch with working families. We deserve better.

"I’m proud to stand with Howard Hampton – a leader who is upfront, honest, and principled. You know you can count on us to stand up for seniors, children, parents, and working people.

"This time, ask yourself ‘Which leader and party can I count on to fight for a fair deal for working families?’

"I hope I can count on your support on October 10."

Peter Tabuns has a long history of activism and advocacy in Toronto-Danforth, which he was elected to represent in a recent byelection.

He cares about people and is passionate about protecting our environment and providing excellent public services.

Peter has long been a strong and effective campaigner for the protection of our environment. As Executive Director of Greenpeace Canada from 1999 to 2004, he fought to prevent climate change, worked to protect our wilderness heritage and advocated for the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol.

Peter knows Toronto-Danforth well. He was city councillor for the Riverdale portion of the riding from 1990 to 1997. Jack Layton and Peter ran joint campaigns in the 1994 and 1997 elections. Prior to being a city councillor, he was President of Citizens for a Safe Environment and helped end garbage incineration in the Toronto Portlands. He championed housing alternatives as Vice Chair of the Co-op Housing Federation of Toronto.

Throughout his term as councillor and as deputy mayor, Peter worked to protect our public health system and public ownership of city services. He advocated for laws to increase integrity and prevent dishonest bidding at City Hall.

As Chair of the Toronto Board of Health, Peter championed initiatives including: funding for school food programs; projects to reduce smog and save energy; programs to reduce chemicals harmful to our environment; and protection of public health funding.

Peter has a son, Anton, and lives with his partner, theatre designer and York University professor Shawn Kerwin.
