NDP Leader Howard Hampton says Dalton McGuinty owes Ontario families answers after a scathing Auditor General’s annual report that exposes serious and widespread McGuinty government mismanagement.
“We know Dalton McGuinty broke his promises to Ontario families. Now, we learn from the Auditor General that Mr. McGuinty has left our province a mismanaged mess too,” Hampton said.
The annual report exposes big problems across the provincial government, including:
· Novice drivers who take a provincially approved course get into accidents more often than drivers who haven't taken the course; the province has not investigated its accredited driving schools.
· The Ministry of Health ignores pharmacies that overcharge the government for prescription drugs.
· Ontario has no idea how many operating rooms the province has, and at times, an estimated 40% of those rooms have sat empty.
· The Ministry of Natural Resources lacks the funding to enforce the province's fish and wildlife laws.
· Seniors in long-term care are being prescribed a bewildering diet of medications, some expired, without their documented consent.
· Ontario is owed $967 million in retail sales taxes, up from $587 million in 1999.
· More than 1,300 sex offenders are not on a provincial sex-offender registry.
· GO Transit’s capital plan will not accommodate future increase in commuters.
· The Ministry of the Environment is not properly monitoring the dumping of hazardous waste.
“The NDP will make sure Ontarians get answers to these boondoggles,” Hampton said.
