Inadequate funding jeopardizes full-day kindergarten

NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo went after the McGuinty Liberals for putting full-day kindergarten programs in jeopardy.

“Despite the McGuinty Liberal’s campaign promises, the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) will be forced to cut their effective full-day kindergarten program to cover budget shortfalls,” said DiNovo. “St. Thomas More School now stands to lose the program that inspired the McGuinty government's campaign promise.”

The full-day kindergarten program implemented by the TCDSB has proven to be so successful that the McGuinty Liberals promised to implement these programs province-wide. However, due to the McGuinty Liberal’s flawed funding formula and rules to cut $14 million, these full-day kindergarten programs are now threatened.

Today in Question Period, DiNovo asked the Education Minister if she would keep the Liberal’s election promise and commit to the children of Toronto Catholic schools that she will not cut their full-day kindergarten classes to pay for a budget shortfall.

“After using St. Thomas More School as an inspiring example of successful full-day kindergarten during their election campaign, you would think that the Education Minister would do something to keep it running,” said DiNovo. “Instead, the Education Minister made an uninspiring move by refusing to take action and shifting responsibility and blame to the TCDSB.”
