NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo was joined by the Trans Health Lobby Group and other activists for an announcement by the Minister of Health concerning Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS) coverage.

“Thanks to the Trans Health Lobby Group, Susan Gapka, Nicole Nussbaum, Martine Stonehouse and others who have worked tirelessly for this moment,” said DiNovo, who as a United Church Minister conducted the first ‘legalized’ same sex marriage in North America.

Before her role as MPP, DiNovo has worked on addressing Trans issues as a Minister of the United Church. Her Lambda award winning book ‘Qu(e)erying Evangelism’ documents the life of trans folk in her congregation and outlines exactly why this issue is so important.

“Although it has taken a while for the government to listen, we finally have SRS funded and have saved hundreds of lives because we have stood up for the human rights of transsexual people,” said DiNovo. “This is a huge win for the Trans community.”
