NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said she’s happy that the McGuinty Liberals ended their political shenanigans and finally ponied up their one-third share of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) new streetcar contract.
“I would like to congratulate the TTC and Bombardier workers and their families for standing with New Democrats in urging the McGuinty government to finally fund its one-third share of the TTC new streetcar contract,” said Horwath.
For months, New Democrats have been on their feet at Queen’s Park pushing for all new Ontario transit vehicles to have at least 50 per cent Ontario content. Today, New Democrats are happy that the McGuinty Liberals ended their political games and funded these much-needed, made-in-Ontario streetcars during a time when Ontarians need it the most. Bombardier has been making streetcars for decades in Thunder Bay, and the NDP thanks the TTC and the City of Toronto for choosing to support Ontario jobs.
“Ontario couldn’t afford to watch this deal get derailed by cheap political shenanigans. These new streetcars will improve public transit for more than three million Ontarians. They will ensure the jobs of hundreds of workers in Thunder Bay. And they will get more people out of their cars, helping Ontario meet our climate change objectives. It’s a win-win proposition and I’m glad New Democrats fought to make it happen,” said Horwath.
