Niagara Centre MPP Peter Kormos is sounding the alarm about potential cuts to health care for local patients with heart problems.
Today in Question Period, Kormos grilled the McGuinty government about its chronic underfunding of Heart Niagara and how that may shut down the respected non-for-profit community health organization, depriving local patients of important services like cardiac rehabilitation.
“People across Niagara are worried Dalton McGuinty′s broken promises are going to shut down Heart Niagara and rob local patients of important heart care services they need and deserve,” Kormos said.
“Minister - Heart Niagara is an integral part of health care in my community. What are you going to do to ensure it continues to deliver high-quality cardiac care services for people across Niagara,” Kormos asked Health Minister George Smitherman.
Officials at Heart Niagara say the McGuinty government has a troubling double standard for cardiac care in Ontario. They say that while some regions get up to $1,000 per patient in funding, Niagara only gets $300 per patient.
“Heart Niagara is on life support because Dalton McGuinty has a double standard for cardiac care – one standard for Niagara, and a higher standard for everyone else. That′s completely unfair to patients across Niagara. They deserve better,” Kormos said.
