McGUINTY LETTING DOWN FIRST NATIONS - AGAIN

NDP Leader Howard Hampton today called on McGuinty Liberals to live up to their legal responsibilities and respect Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation′s right to consultation on development that takes place on their traditional territory, not force the First Nation to fight for its rights in court.

“Dalton McGuinty is letting down First Nations – again, “Hampton said.

“With Caledonia still fresh in our memory, the premier is breaking promises to First Nations again. This time – it′s the premier′s promise to recognize First Nations′ constitutional rights over development on their traditional lands. Regrettably, the Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation isn′t being consulted. It′s being forced to sue the McGuinty government, to have its rights recognized, while it faces a $10 billion lawsuit from Platinex exploration company,” said Hampton.

Hampton reminded the McGuinty Liberals about the precendent-setting Mikisew Supreme Court ruling, where the country′s highest court ruled First Nations must be consulted before activities that could impact their treaty rights move forward.

The Independent First Nation′s Alliance has actively pursued the McGuinty government to jointly develop protocols and guidelines for purposes of consultation. Yet, over the past year the Minister of Northern Development and Mines failed to respond to their hand-delivered letters offering their assistance in the development of consultation protocols and guidelines for their traditional areas.

“Minister, can you tell Big Trout and the Independent First Nations Alliance why you are developing consultation guidelines and protocols without their input?” Hampton asked the Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs.
