McGUINTY’S HUNGER CRISIS

NDP Poverty Critic Michael Prue wants to know why Dalton McGuinty is letting Toronto′s children go hungry.

Today, Toronto′s Daily Bread Food Bank sounded the alarm, reporting that almost 340,000 children in the GTA, a record high, rely on food banks.

“Dalton McGuinty said we should judge a government by how we treat our most vulnerable citizens – but despite promise after promise those children who rely on food banks have seen no new assistance from the McGuinty Liberals,” said Prue in the Legislature.

The McGuinty Liberals intercept up to $1500 per month per child of federal money destined to the poorest Ontario children, by “clawing back” the National Child Benefit Supplement from Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support recipients.

Prue noted, “Before the election, Dalton McGuinty said it was wrong to take money away from Ontario′s poorest children. He said: “The clawback is wrong and we will end it.”

“How do you justify breaking your promise – to stop the clawback of the National Child Benefit Supplement when we have a hunger crisis in the GTA? “ Prue asked the Premier. “Start today. Help those hungry kids. Tell them when will you stop the clawback of the National Child Benefit – as you promised”.
