NDP Justice Critic Peter Kormos says the McGuinty Liberals′ plan to dismantle the human rights commission will make it harder for victims of Islamophobia to seek justice.
Today, the Ontario Human Rights Commission released its annual report and noted its concern with the rise in anti-Arab sentiment in Ontario.
“Dalton McGuinty′s plans to dismantle the human rights commission is going to force people suffering discrimination, especially with the rise of anti-Arab sentiment, to retain lawyers, and go to the Tribunal on their own without the investigative supportive human rights commission. That is an Americanization of Ontario′s human rights process,” said Kormos.
“Dalton McGuinty wants to eliminate, dismantle and abolish the commission that provides neutral and objective investigation in prosecuting human rights violations, in resolving them and representing the public interest – and it′s extremely disappointing to hear the Human Rights Commissioner say that she supports the goals of the McGuinty government. The goal of the McGuinty government is to dismantle that very commission,” said Kormos.
The NDP Justice critic says the McGuinty Liberals have turned their back on their responsibility to ensure human rights and justice for all Ontarians.
