Michael Prue has a long and distinguished career standing up for the people of this riding. On September 20, 2001 he won a by-election to replace long-time MPP Frances Lankin, handily winning with almost 50% of the vote.

The North Toronto Post recognized his exceptional commitment to his constituents by naming Michael Prue "Best Local Politician" in 1999.

Prue was first elected as an East York councillor in 1988. He went on to serve as East York's mayor from 1993 to 1997 - until the Mike Harris Conservatives erased East York with Toronto's forced amalgamation.

Since 1997, Prue has served as councillor in the new City of Toronto.

Throughout his career, Prue has stood firm for the things that matter.

He maintained or expanded funding for vital services such as police, transit, child care, children's programs, and the homeless. He supported city measures to improve housing for seniors, children, and the disabled. He voted against sending Toronto's garbage to Kirkland Lake and he was part of the NDP team that defeated the Adams Mine garbage proposal.

When Mike Harris drastically cut municipal representation, Prue successfully fought to secure a third councillor's position for East York.

As mayor, Prue was widely respected for bringing in five consecutive budgets with no tax increase, cutting East York's debt by $7.8 million, and ushering in new industry, commercial growth, and jobs to the community.

Prue and his wife, Shirley Curson-Prue, have lived in Beaches-East York for over 18 years. He is a well-known champion of the community.

He has a B.A. from the University of Toronto in Political Science and Anthropology and an M.A. from Carleton University in Canadian Studies. Before entering politics Prue worked as counsel to the Minister of Employment and Immigration.
