Beaches-East York MPP and NDP Finance Critic Michael Prue has committed his party’s support to a group of condominium owners in their bid to draw attention to how the dreaded HST will impact them.
“This tax grab will impact a huge group of citizens, many of who are retired and living on fixed incomes. The 8 per cent tax grab will force some people out of their homes – there is no doubt,” Prue said.
Linda Pinnizotto, the President of the Trinity-Spadina Condo Owners Association concurs.
“When contracted services from plumbing to maintenance to landscaping services rise by 8 per cent, Boards of Directors will have to find the money somehow. The only way we have to raise this money is through our condo fees. I am afraid that people will reach an economic threshold and won’t be able to pay more fees than they already do,” Pinizitto said.
The President of the Board of Directors of The Classique at Eiffel Towers in Thornhill, Stanley Smith agrees. He has asked the McGuinty government to “reconsider the HST and its negative affects: clearly it is an unfair burden place on the backs of condominium residents already suffering the negative affects of the current recession.”
Prue has vowed to continue his opposition to the HST on behalf of condominium owners and many others across the province that simply can’t pay any more.
