Miller asks: Why hasn’t Mahoney been fired yet?

NDP MPP Paul Miller, the party’s Critic for the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), has a simple question: Why hasn’t WSIB Chair Steve Mahoney lost his job yet?

“This Liberal appointee spends so much time living the good life at taxpayers’ expense that the organization he is charged with guiding sits rife with mismanagement,” said Miller.

NDP proposes sweeping Employment Standards Changes

NDP Employment Standards Critic Cheri DiNovo today unveiled a sweeping private members bill designed to bring the Ontario Employment Standards Act into the twenty-first century.

“There are many instances where Ontarians work as part-time, casual workers who never meet their actual employer. These triangular employment relationships have resulted in vast forms of discrimination, including unpaid wages, harassment and gross violations of employment rules,” said DiNovo, in outlining the need for the modernization of the province’s employment standards laws.

Miller Calls for Minister of Labour’s Resignation

NDP WSIB Critic, MPP Paul Miller demanded that the Premier ask his Minister of Labour to resign in Question Period today.

Miller grilled the Premier on his Minister’s performance, noting that “the Minister of Labour has not only fallen down on the job of protecting the employment standards of Ontario workers, he has failed to fix the workplace safety and insurance system that is failing injured workers in our province.”

Horwath demands Labour Minister’s resignation

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is demanding the resignation of Labour Minister Peter Fonseca for his failure to act on allegations made by foreign caregivers of workplace abuse and harassment.

The allegations, leveled against Liberal MP Ruby Dhalla, were made at a meeting attended by Fonseca and Education Minister Kathleen Wynne in late April. The meeting took place in Wynne’s constituency office.

Andrea Horwath stands up for pregnant women, new moms

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is calling on the McGuinty government to step in and enforce employment standards protection for pregnant women and new moms.

“It’s unconscionable that in Ontario today, women are getting the pink slips for having children, with the economic crisis being used as an excuse. This is discriminatory and a violation of their human rights. The McGuinty Liberals must put a stop to this and ensure that no pregnant woman or new mother is forced to endure this ordeal,” said Horwath.
