NDP MPPs are lambasting the McGuinty government for delaying the approval of electric cars on Ontario roads and dragging its feet on tackling climate change.

With increasing numbers of Ontarians clamouring for access to the environmentally-friendly vehicles, the Ministry of Transportation has commissioned an independent safety study of low speed electric vehicles, even though British Columbia and Quebec already allow low-emission electric cars on their roads.

NDP Transportation critic Gilles Bisson called on the McGuinty Liberals to come clean on their plan for the proposed Blue 22 air-rail link between Union Station and Pearson Airport.

“Decisions like this shouldn’t be made under the radar and in the backroom. The people of York South-Weston have been very clear – they do not want the privately-run, publicly-subsidized Blue 22 air-rail link. Why is an anonymous ‘government source’ telling the citizens of York South-Weston that construction may start in early 2009?” Bisson asked.

NDP Transportation Critic Gilles Bisson today questioned the effectiveness of the Ministry of Transportation’s driver licensing practices in the wake of several troubling incidents.

The latest cause for concern: the case of a Kingston-area man who managed to obtain a driver’s licence even after he received a lifetime driving ban for killing four people while driving drunk.

York South Weston NDP MPP Paul Ferreira after just three short months at Queen’s Park, scored an important victory for commuters and communities along the GO Transit Georgetown Rail Corridor.

Today his resolution calling on the McGuinty government to start showing real support for public transit along the Corridor was carried with all party support in the Legislature.

Newly sworn in NDP MPP for York South-Weston Paul Ferreira did not waste any time in attacking the McGuinty Liberals for their misguided plans for the “Blue 22”, a high-speed air-rail link between Pearson Airport and Union Station.

NDP Transportation Critic Peter Tabuns says the people of Toronto need a real transit strategy to meet their transit needs and concern over climate change - not election announcements.

“Stephen Harper and Dalton McGuinty are two men united by one purpose, getting re-elected,” said Tabuns. “Ordinary Ontarians need a plan that ensure they have transit when they need it – not when Dalton McGuinty and Stephen Harper need votes.”
