Fair, Predictable and Stable Property Tax Needed Now

Sky-high property assessments are whacking homeowners across Ontario – especially seniors and people on fixed incomes.

Dalton McGuinty says he’s seized with the issue. He’s seized all right. Seized like a rusty engine.

New Democrats stand up for homeowners. We believe homeowners deserve a fair, predictable, stable property assessments – not the astonishingly inaccurate, bullying, manipulative, self-serving and cutthroat system condemned by Ontario’s Ombudsman – that ends up forcing people out of their homes.

Dalton McGuinty promised positive change. Instead of progress, we’re seeing the same old approach – passing the buck on the issue until after the next provincial election – setting homeowners up for a huge shock from a ticking tax bomb.

New Democrats have a fresh idea – the Freeze Till Sale property assessment model. The new model - put forward by the NDP's Task Force on Assessment and Property Tax - would freeze the assessed value of your home at its purchase price for as long as you own your home. It would replace the McGuinty Liberals' unfair, arbitrary and punishing property assessment system - and make property assessment fair, predictable and easier to understand.

McGuinty’s unbalanced approach leaves families paying more and getting less

October 22, 2009 - 4:00pm

New Democrat Leader Andrea Horwath says the McGuinty Liberals’ unbalanced approach to the economy leaves families paying more and getting less.

“Ontarians want a government that will balance its priorities, not one that puts the entire burden onto the backs of families,” said Horwath. “The McGuinty Liberals are telling Ontario families to pay more and expect less. Yet they still have billions for and irresponsible and unfair corporate tax giveaway.”

McGuinty’s HST will hike condo fees: Horwath

August 13, 2009 - 3:00pm

Andrea Horwath, the new leader of Ontario’s NDP, says Dalton McGuinty’s “unfair tax grab” will hurt hundreds of thousands of condo owners across the province.

“For a new homeowner paying the bills can be a real struggle, especially in tough times. Instead of making housing more affordable, the McGuinty Liberals Harmonized Sales Tax will mean hundreds of dollars more per year in condo fees,” said the NDP Leader.

DON'T wait for Ottawa on pension reform: Horwath

August 6, 2009 - 3:00pm

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath called on Dalton McGuinty to ensure that Ontario families will have a reliable income when they retire and not shrug-off responsibility to the federal government.

“Too many Ontarians don’t know whether they'll be able to retire after years of hard work. The McGuinty government has to take responsibility for the growing pension crisis,” said Horwath. “This is a serious issue. We can't wait for the federal government to act, we need to move on a ‘Made in Ontario’ solution,” said Horwath.
