Girls’ Government Initiative

Today, MPP Cheri DiNovo introduced the first ‘Girl’s Government’ project, which has been started in Parkdale-High Park with students from Fern and Parkdale Public Schools. DiNovo began the project in September of 2008 and the girls have been meeting monthly.

Andrea Horwath stands up for pregnant women, new moms

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is calling on the McGuinty government to step in and enforce employment standards protection for pregnant women and new moms.

“It’s unconscionable that in Ontario today, women are getting the pink slips for having children, with the economic crisis being used as an excuse. This is discriminatory and a violation of their human rights. The McGuinty Liberals must put a stop to this and ensure that no pregnant woman or new mother is forced to endure this ordeal,” said Horwath.

DiNovo calls for committee on violence against women

NDP Women’s Critic Cheri DiNovo is calling for an all-party women’s committee to examine violence against women in recognition of Women Abuse Prevention Month.

“It's not enough to simply acknowledge a Women Abuse Prevention Month. We need to proactively act to address the root causes of violence against women,” said DiNovo.
