Holocaust Memorial Day Statement - Delivered by Peter Tabuns, NDP Critic for Citizenship & Immigration, Monday, May 5, 2008

Today I rise to remember and honour those who faced unimaginable horror and persecution, less than a few decades ago.

NDP Environment Critic Peter Tabuns today slammed the McGuinty government for its continuing failure to present a comprehensive climate change plan.

“Another Earth Day has come and Dalton McGuinty still does not have a meaningful climate change plan for Ontario,” said Tabuns.

Ontario’s NDP honoured Larry Taylor and the late Ben Russell for their significant contributions towards eliminating racial discrimination at the annual J.S. Woodsworth Awards.
“I am proud to pay tribute to Larry Taylor and the late Ben Russell for their work to eliminate racism and racial discrimination by awarding them the J.S Woodsworth award. They have both made important contributions in the fight against prejudice and hatred based on colour, race, or ethnic origin. Tonight, I have the privilege of honouring them both for leading the struggle for a just and equitable Ontario,” said NDP Citizenship and Immigration Critic Peter Tabuns.

“The McGuinty government’s failure to undertake proper consultations with the Ardoch First Nation regarding uranium exploration on their traditional lands has ended with co-chief Robert Lovelace being sentenced to six months in jail and fined $25,000,” said NDP Environment Critic, Peter Tabuns.

York and Durham residents are being forced to accept polluting and CO2 intensive garbage incinerators because of the McGuinty government’s failure to address waste diversion in Ontario, said NDP Environment Critic Peter Tabuns.

Ontarians want immediate action from the McGuinty government to protect our children from potentially toxic chemicals, such as Bisphenol A, found in various childrens’ products,” said NDP Environment Critic, Peter Tabuns.
