Fairness, Equity and Prosperity for New Ontarians
Did you know 1 in 6 newcomers to Canada leaves the country within a year?
It’s true – Ontario is experiencing a brain drain of talented new Canadian professionals who are moving out of the province to search for better opportunities.
New Democrats stand up for New Canadians. We believe in an Ontario that is strong because it is diverse -- where people from different backgrounds, from different countries and who speak different languages all work together to build a province where everyone shares in our prosperity.
Dalton McGuinty promised positive change. Instead of progress, we’re seeing the same old approach – foreign-trained professionals – our province’s greatest untapped assets -- left waiting too long for the professional accreditation they need to build a brighter future for them and their families.
Now, the McGuinty Liberals have announced plans to for deep cuts to Ontario’s Human Rights Commission – forcing New Canadians who suffer discrimination to pay out-of-pocket to enforce their rights.
Fair, Predictable and Stable Property Tax Needed Now
Sky-high property assessments are whacking homeowners across Ontario – especially seniors and people on fixed incomes.
Dalton McGuinty says he’s seized with the issue. He’s seized all right. Seized like a rusty engine.
New Democrats stand up for homeowners. We believe homeowners deserve a fair, predictable, stable property assessments – not the astonishingly inaccurate, bullying, manipulative, self-serving and cutthroat system condemned by Ontario’s Ombudsman – that ends up forcing people out of their homes.
Dalton McGuinty promised positive change. Instead of progress, we’re seeing the same old approach – passing the buck on the issue until after the next provincial election – setting homeowners up for a huge shock from a ticking tax bomb.
New Democrats have a fresh idea – the Freeze Till Sale property assessment model. The new model - put forward by the NDP's Task Force on Assessment and Property Tax - would freeze the assessed value of your home at its purchase price for as long as you own your home. It would replace the McGuinty Liberals' unfair, arbitrary and punishing property assessment system - and make property assessment fair, predictable and easier to understand.

If Ontario is doing so well – why are so many people falling behind?
Some 443,000 Ontario children live in poverty. Thousands of families are waiting for basic necessities of life like affordable housing and child care. And autistic children continue to go without the treatment they need to learn, grow and prosper.
New Democrats stand up for our most vulnerable citizens. We believe in an Ontario that holds limitless opportunities for people – and prosperity that can be shared and enjoyed by all citizens, because everyone matters.
Dalton McGuinty promised positive change. Instead of progress, we’re seeing the same old approach – too many people in our wealthy province falling through the cracks, being left to fend for themselves.
Helping our most vulnerable citizens – now there’s a fresh idea. Let’s build that affordable housing. Let’s create more child care spaces. Let’s provide treatment to every autistic child who needs it. And let’s stop the clawback of the National Child Benefit Supplement – which robs $1,500 a year from our poorest children.
Everyone wants students to reach higher.
Dalton McGuinty wants to make them reach deeper in their pockets – because he’s raising their college and university tuition fees by 20 to 36 per cent over four years.
New Democrats stand up for students. We believe they should be able to afford a high-quality post-secondary education – because young people are our future – because we all benefit from a highly-educated workforce – and because no-one should have to mortgage their future to build a better life for themselves.
Dalton McGuinty promised positive change. Instead of progress, we’re seeing the same old approach – more tuition hikes – even though Ontario students already pay tuition fees well above the national average.
The NDP has a fresh idea – the Tuition Hike Ban bill. If passed, the bill would freeze tuition through 2007, then give working families their say on the issue in the next provincial election.

No More Nukes in Ontario
Nuclear power has a disappointing track record in Ontario: Massive cost overruns that drive up rates, reliability problems that could mean lights out, and toxic nuclear waste we don’t know how to store.
Nuclear plants are expensive, unreliable and risky.
Do we really want more?
Dalton McGuinty promised positive change. Instead of progress, we’re seeing the same old approach – Mr. McGuinty wants to repeat the mistakes of the past. He wants more nuclear power. He even broke Ontario’s environmental protection laws to ensure quick approval.
The NDP stands up for working families. We have a fresh idea -- a safe, clean, affordable and reliable supply of publicly owned and publicly controlled electricity, focused on an aggressive approach to renewables, energy efficiency and energy conservation.
This approach worked in California where the state built the equivalent of 12 power plants with energy efficiency investments, replacing the need for 12,000 megawatts of generation capacity – or almost 50 per cent of Ontario’s peak demand on a hot summer day. We can make it work in Ontario too.
