Why did McGuinty allow Cambrian students to be scammed? NDP

NDP Education critic Rosario Marchese and Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas want to know why the McGuinty Liberals abdicated their responsibility to ensure Cambrian College students were getting the education they were paying for.

“Cambrian College touted a program that made students believe they would get lucrative jobs at the end of it. However, after two years of hard work and thousands of dollars later the program left its graduates unqualified,” said Marchese. “The Government should be protecting students from scams like this but the McGuinty Liberals failed to act.”

Last September the Provincial Ombudsman launched an investigation into Sudbury’s Cambrian College following complaints that students who enrolled in the Health Information Management program ended up being unqualified for jobs the college had advertised.

“The North has lost thousands of jobs. Many of these students put a lot of time, energy and money into training for employment opportunities that are in demand,” Gélinas said. “These students have been let down by a government that allows colleges to deceive them.”

Marchese said the lack of oversight is a systemic problem in the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. He calls on the McGuinty government to give the Ombudsman oversight over Training, Colleges and Universities.

“These students should be reimbursed after being scammed and the McGuinty Liberals have a responsibility to help them,” said Gélinas.
