NDP condemns new holiday for MPPs

NDP House Leader Peter Kormos today condemned the McGuinty Liberals for giving MPPs a new holiday on the day of every Federal election, starting with next Tuesday.

“Giving MPPs a special holiday is outrageous and offensive for the thousands of hard-working Ontarians who are struggling to make ends meet. MPPs don’t need to give themselves a new holiday rammed through the Legislature after just one hour of debate. They need to get to work during this economic crisis to find solutions for hard-working Ontarians who have seen their jobs disappear. With Ontario’s economy going to hell in a handbasket, there’s important public business to be done,” said Kormos.

Kormos made his remarks after the McGuinty Liberals used their majority to change the rules so that the Provincial Legislature will no longer sit on days on which Federal elections are held.

“Dalton McGuinty’s priorities are all wrong and this act shows it. He is completely out of touch with the most pressing concerns of everyday Ontarians – who lie awake worrying about their jobs, their pensions and their savings. Rather than giving himself a day to help save his flailing Federal cousins, Dalton McGuinty should roll up his sleeves and get to work on behalf of the hard-working Ontarians he is supposed to serve. His government’s contempt for these Ontarians is outrageous,” said Kormos.
